Is the US prepared for an increase in the frequency of pregnancy in older women? According to a well known infertility clinic – probably not.
Today’s reproductive technology has allowed women into their 50′s to get pregnant. Now, as more and more women are postponing starting families until later in life due to careers, divorces, the economy, etc., the US is about to see a dramatic rise in the number of women perusing pregnancy later in life.
In a statement released by the CHR today discussing pregnancy in older women the authors address the societal ramifications of older mothers. These include high risk pregnancies, more pre-term deliveries, and widening gaps between the ages of children and their parents.
Medicine is not ready to manage pregnancy in older women safely and society is not ready to help them cope with older motherhood.
